Matiční gymnázium Ostrava is the oldest grammar school in the city of Ostrava. It was founded in 1897.

It is a prestigeous grammar school whose teaching language is Czech.

Our grammar school offers

  • The process of quality education is based on our highly educated teachers. The teaching process at our grammar school has been based for decades on the work of experts whose results exceed the average. Preparation for various competitions is taken for granted and that is why our school is so successful.
  • Our classrooms are equipped with modern technology gadgets (plasma televisions, overhead projectors, interactive boards). Our school houses special classrooms (chemistry labs, a classroom of physics, biological labs, art studio, musical studio, two language labs, two gyms, a fitness centre, three IT classrooms, wifi network).
  • A great novelty is a students´print centre where our students can print both their study materials and their essays. Our school magazines are published there as well.
  • Our portfolio of languages comprises English, French, Latin, German, Russian and Spanish.

These are the languages taught in our regular classes. Except this basic language portfolio our school offers extracurricular language courses. This year we offer English conversation, Chinese and Italian with native speakers. Furthermore, we are an official Cambridge ESOL preparation centre. The FCE course is taught by a British Council lecturer and we are planning to open a CAE course in September 2013.

  • Our school houses a research library which is continually replenished with new volumes.
  • The instruction in our classes is organized with the perspective of the future career of our students and is aimed at their future university studies.
  • We focus the studies of our students on their future career in the form of optional seminars in science, humanities and economy.
  • Recently a new fitness centre has been opened. It is equipped with a rowing simulator and various fitness equipment.

Exracurricular activities

  • We put stress on extracurricular activities. There is a wide range of interest circles our students can choose from. Surprisigly, there is a big interest in traditional forms of entertainment like choir singing or dance groups.
  • Our Red Cross group is on professional level.
  • We offer study trips to Great Britain, Austria and France.
  • Our talented students can be involved in international programmes and cooperate with our partners in Sweden, Italy, France.

Chess club

Our students can learn the tactics and strategy of this table game. They are trained by an  international chess master. They can prove their qualities in various championships.

Red Cross circle

The members of this circle learn the basics of first-aid and how to behave in dangerous situations.

Basketball circle

Our students learn the tactics of this ball game. They participate in various competitions.

Biological circle

Students explore the nature under the guidance of our biology teacher (an enthusiastic ornithologist).

Aerobics

Students can ventilate their energy in this rhytmic sport activity.

Volleyball
